Unusual, Interesting and Funny Things That Happen to an Outfitter - With 30+ Years of Experience.

Our presenter this week is Ginny Nelson, Manager and Co-Owner of Spirit of the Wilderness Outfitter & Outdoor Store.

She has been traveling the BWCA for over 30 years. Each season she outfits and sends numerous groups, solo travelers, and families on on Boundary Waters as well as Quetico Park adventures. Her active lifestyle includes; managing an outfitting staff, purchasing products for a retail store (she knows her products!), while raising two young daughters. Ginny enjoys fishing, camping and hiking with her family. She brings a fresh look at camping and canoeing gear, and in-depth knowledge of travel routes and more.

The Superior Hiking Trail
The Superior Hiking Trail:
The SHT is 300 miles long.
The SHT paid staff is 6 to 9 people.
In 2023, 460 volunteers contributed 8,790 hours.
It is estimated that 50,000 people hike, backpack, run, or snowshoe the trail each year. There are no fees to hike or camp on the trail.
The SHT crosses 80 different private properties, in addition to hundreds of parcels of public land.

The Heritage Program of the Superior National Forest and Heritage Sites in the BWCA.

The presenter this week is Greg Heide, West Zone Archaeologist with the Superior National Forest.

Greg works out of the Kawishiwi District office in Ely.  He received his Masters Degree from Florida State University and has worked for the National Park Service in Florida and the National Forest Service in Colville, WA; Duluth and Ely.
He will briefly talk about the Heritage Program of the Superior National Forest and some Heritage Sites in the Boundary Waters.

Our presenter this week is Michael Raich, PhD, President, Minnesota North College.
Michael Raich has served as president of Minnesota North College since 2019 providing strategic vision for advancing the mission and core values of the college. As president, Dr. Raich led the process to merge the five previously independently accredited NHED colleges into one accredited college. Through a process called Vision NE, he engaged, NHED constituents and stakeholders including students, employees, bargaining units, legislators, and members of the community, as well as The Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and the Higher Learning Commission. The three year process led to Minnesota North College opening its doors to students in the fall of 2022. 
Prior to his role as president, Raich served Hibbing Community College, as provost and as dean of Academic Affairs and Student Services and served Itasca Community College as interim provost.  Before working in higher education, he spent 17 years in K–12 as a former high school, teacher, athletic director, and principal. Raich serves on multiple regional boards that support K–12, business/industry, and non-profit partners. Rachel holds a bachelors degree from the university of Minnesota Duluth, a masters from St. Cloud State University, and a doctorate from the University of North Dakota.
