Terri Olson updated us all on the Rose Sale with 137 tickets sold and paid for, leaving 43 left for the booth at GEL or Zup's, with 120 still out with members to sell on their own. Please get your tickets sold or turned back for the booth sales if you won't be able to do them yourself.

Presenter: Kathy Chavers - Chair of the Bois Forte Band of Minnesota Chippewa.

Kathy came to us with a wealth of information about Native Americans and their history, much of it not known the vast majority of us. She graduated from Orr High School, with parents who had lived in Chicago. She has worked for Bois Forte for many years, mainly in health care, but changing to the political realm in 2008.

Bois Forte includes land at Nett Lake, Lake Vermilion, and one more parcel of land only. They are part of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe where she is the President of this Association of Minnesota Tribes, working for all of their members.

Some of the issues she discussed were the latest proposed changes to blood quantum to determine membership, the sordid history of boarding schools that have impacted their members for many decades, and how they are protected by the BIA, as opposed to local law enforcement.

She is working, along with others to get a better understanding of Native American culture and history into the social studies curriculum across the state. Virtually none of us truly understand their sovereign status and the lengthy struggles with poverty and to implement their treaty rights, guaranteed so long ago.

She believes in trying to bring improvement to their members with Broadband and health care, but also that their casino be a tourism destination with gaming, fishing, tourism, including the Wilderness golf course.

A great education for us today.
