Rotary Club of Ely

Meeting Summary - october 20, 2021 - Meeting 5063

bill tefft - ely Field Naturalists

Todd greeted the member at Grand Ely Lodge and via Zoom.

Todd Heiman welcomed the group today with our first real day of fall. He reminded all of the Board meeting on November 1st and the discussion about fundraisers for next year - perhaps a raffle, but not an auction. We welcome ideas for another fundraiser this upcoming year. We have submitted a grant request for tables and benches for both the Chamber of Commerce and Hidden Valley Ski and Bike.

He thanked the eight members who participated in the roadside cleanup and also welcomed our guests today.

Topics for Today - Bill Tefft - Ely Field Naturalists

Todd introduced his longterm acquaintance, Bill Tefft, a former teacher at VCC, now retired and wanting to known more for his naturalist skills overall, beyond birding. He discussed the beauty of tamarack tree color this time of year. He spoke of his thoughts as a naturalist on fire, recreation, and how we experience the wilderness and wildness of our area.

He discussed the availability of wild lands, whether in the cities, townships, state and federal lands, as well as private land. He moved to talk about invasive species and their impact upon the environment. We struggle with buckthorn and other invasives. The question is whether to fight them or just accept their arrival.

He especially singled out the Shagawa River on County Road 88 for both its beauty and the plethora of Buckthorn prevalent there.
