President Campbell welcomed those at the Grand Ely Lodge and via Zoom. Today was all about our annual visit from our District Governor, Kay Biga, from the Eco Rotary Club of Superior, WI. She first met with the Board to understand our accomplishments and our priorities for the upcoming year. She told us of her history in Ely, with she and her mother, Jan Biga, who joined us for lunch as the former owners of the Hardees Restaurant that has now become Rockwood. We emphasized our benches and furniture around the town, the Food Shelf Penny jars, the highway cleanup, our participation in the Blueberry/Art Festival, as well as our scholarship programs, the Interact Club and our overall community involvement. We gave her information on our Raffle, as well as our upcoming Rotary Rose sale in September.
For the regular meeting she gave us her history of coming into Rotary, leaving Rotary, and coming back again with a new club, Eco Rotary. As District Governor (and we were joined by two Past District Governors, our own Craig Loughery, and Marge McPeak from the Virginia Club) she visits from the North Dakota to Ontario with the many clubs in our District. Our District 5580 is one of the largest in Rotary, with 2,400 Rotarians.
She also gave us a sample of the international visits that she has made to Istanbul Turkey, Delhi India, and Accra Ghana. She helped us celebrate Women In Rotary, with herself, Jennifer Jones our International President, and our own Angela Campbell.
Today we also celebrated Tom Moore's Paul Harris Fellowship +7 award for his generous contributions. We were joined by Lisa Ledel's granddaughter Michaela who won the 50/50 raffle, Gerry Fisher who is interested in our Club, as well as Jesse who is a new employee from the Ely Chamber of Commerce.
Overall a busy day for the Rotary Club of Ely!
