President Heiman welcomed members for a Zoom only regular meeting.
Ward Nelson did the honors by signing Happy Birthday to Jeff Sundell, present on the call. Todd reviewed some of the actions of the Board Meeting on December 6th. We approved a 25% membership discount for couples in the same household or organization who pay on their own, and continued to discuss either a concert or rose sale fundraiser, in addition to a raffle. The best news is that Tom Moore has agreed to VP and President over the next four years. We also funded a scholarship for two students at a writing camp, $500 to Winter Festival, $100 gift to our server at the GEL, Tammy Kisch.
Todd did double duty by also being today's presenter.
As your Secretary, I won't try to get as technical as Todd since he has a far better understanding, but I will summarize.
Today he gave us a high-level review of crypto currencies, including the most well known, Bitcoin. These currencies may or may not become the way of the future for all of us, but certainly are becoming more used for commerce, as well as investment opportunities. The underpinning of these currencies is a distributed database shared among nodes across the world.
The advantages of such technology is that it is distributed, decentralized, transparent, permanently recorded, not editable, and has many applications. He then spoke more about one such currency, Bitcoin, that is a worldwide currency that is digital and an open network. The total supply and rate of issuance is known and fixed and Bitcoin is freely exchangeable, even with Bitcoin ATM's popping up.
He also gave us a primer on our own currency, the dollar, and its history from being pegged to gold to today the government able to print more when needed.
Jeff Sundell won the 50/50 drawing and with Bitcoin having an exchange rate of $48,250 per Bitcoin, he would have won 0.000165 Bitcoin for his $8.00.
