Rotary Club of Ely

Meeting Summary - June 16, 2021 - Meeting 5045

Auction and raffle Update - Author Tim Duff

Club Information
Todd Heiman welcomed the Club at the Grand Ely Lodge, as well as those attending on Zoom.
This is the second large in person meeting in almost fifteen months, a couple of folks also on Zoom.
The meeting began with a presentation by Ward Nelson of Paul Harris pins to Kurt Soderberg and Joe Owens  for their $1,000 contributions to The Rotary Foundation - Joe's for a plus one for his ongoing contributions for many years. Both were thanked for their generosity. We also have received two online donations to the Rotary Foundation on the new web portal.
Stop by on Chapman Street and see the progress on the Pocket Park, with our Rotary furniture in place - but sadly no Rotary porta-potty.
The silent auction items will go live on the website on July 20th so watch for that. Auction items continue to come in slowly and members are reminded to make their calls to solicit items and to keep selling raffle tickets.

Topics for Today - Author Tim Duff:

Tim Duff is semi-retired investment manager who has deep ties to the Ely community, but who grew up in Edina. His family roots are in the Childers family, with his grandfather having been the mine manager for the Oliver underground mine in Ely from 1933 to 1944. He told us of his family history, but then related a story whose genesis was from a dream. He has built upon that kernel of an idea to write and soon publish "The Find", a book set in Ely, with a different name, and with characters based upon some local history.

"The Find" is a mystery based upon the premise of finding precious metals at the bottom of the mine in Ely in 1934, the family's attempt to secure the rights to these minerals and the international intrigue leading to Switzerland and meeting with a Lex Luthor type of villain. We won't know the end until we buy the book but he favored us with reading. The book will be published this fall by Waterside Press.
