President Campbell welcomed those at the Grand Ely Lodge and via Zoom.
Guests were introduced by the Sergeant at Arms and we were welcomed by the President.
Terri Olson and Tom Moore updated us all on the Rose Sale with 284 tickets sold. We hope to have six to eight coupons sold, all at $200. Donations have been very generous, over $1,100, with tips over $150. We have exceeded our original goals and could end up with $6,000 net value on the project.
The Marathon Water stop this Saturday may need volunteers, so please let Angela Campbell know if you can be there.
Joe Owens - Join the Navy and See the World
Joe Owens joined our Club 2002 when he and Caroline moved to Ely. Prior to that he had a twenty year career in the US Navy from 1962 to 1982, retiring as Commander. After graduation from Grinnell College in Iowa, he also received an MBA from Columbia University in New York.
Joe showed us many of his memorabilia from his career, including pictures of this handsome young Naval Officer. Joe served in the Supply Corps and spent time on both the USS Norfolk and USS Bigelow. In addition to serving on these ships, see and Caroline lived in many locations across the US, with the favorite being in Hawaii.
Not only did he cross the equator twice, he also circumnavigated South America twice, stopping in posts along the way and coming to the southern most point near Antartica (and also has been north of the Arctic circle). Some of the pictures showed them navigating the Panama Canal, as well. He described the various ports and locations in the Mediterranean where he was able to visit, even Istanbul Turkey where the US sailors were not necessarily welcomed at the time. He was there at the Washington as the hostages returned from Iran and experienced the tensions of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
