Todd Heiman welcomed members for a Zoom only regular meeting.
Todd provided us with a brief update on Angela Campbell. Jeff Sundell summarized the important developments in the Board meeting. We will seek two students for the RYLA - Youth Leadership - Academy for this summer. We will sponsor two more girls to Camp Atsokan on Rainy Lake with a generous donation in memory of Rotarian Ed Burg. The Board is dropping the idea of sponsoring a concert, but instead will focus upon another cash raffle with a drawing the final day of the Blueberry Art/Festival with leadership from Pat Warner who is asking for assistance. We will also likely have a rose sale this fall.
Tom Moore provided us with a bit of history of the founding of Rotary
Harold Langowski, Ely Clerk/Treasurer and Operations Director
With only short notice, Harold provided us with a summary of much of the work going on in the community:
- Whiteside Park. This summer will see a pair of bronze canoe-related sculptures, donated by Dr. Bill Rom and his wife, Holly.
- Pioneer Mine has a project for a Miner's Memorial remembering those whose lives were lost in our mining history.
- Pocket park will see final work on the Ott Family/Rotary/IRRRB park.
- Hidden Valley has completed the single track bike trail for summer and winter use.
- Ely sponsors the funding for the Prospector ATV club and its expanding trails, including the major bridge over the Beaver River near Bear Head Lake.
- Potential for final funding for the Trailhead Building on the western entrance to the City.
- Beginning of a project to provide a major renovation of the wastewater treatment plant to virtually eliminate any chance of a mercury discharge. Funding provided by grants with only a 5% local match - virtually unprecedented.
- Development of 11 lots on the East Spaulding area adjacent to the Trezona Trail and Miner's Lake.
- The upcoming availability of the Revenue building for potential another use by a governmental or other entity.
He also answered questions about the school project, local street improvements, and the critical shortage of workers.
Ely is fortunate to have Harold in a leadership position to keep moving Ely forward.
