President Heiman welcomed those at the Grand Ely Lodge and via Zoom. He reviewed some more recent activities. First, we have raised $13,457 for the Rotary Foundation for Ukraine Relief - a wonderful amount, and thanks also to Joe and Caroline Owens who generously donated $5,000 to that effort.
We now have four email addresses that will work from your regular email accounts:
president@elyrotary.org
administrator@elyrotary.org
treasurer@elyrotary.org
board@elyrotary.org
When he becomes Treasurer we will begin to use an online version of Quickbooks, for only $75 per year from TechSoup.
Raffle tickets ready for distribution for next week.
Ukraine community members: Luba Lewytzkyj, Mykola Sarazhynskyy and Roman Kovbasnyk
Angela has made contacts with the Ukrainian Community in Minnesota and we heard first hand from those who still had families in Ukraine, including Mothers, siblings, and other close family still there. Roman spoke the most and described his and other representatives efforts to raise money and also send medical and other aid directly to the country. They have raised $250,000 so far, along with $60,000 in medical supplies to Ukraine, via Poland.
They also described the horrible conditions for some with rocket attacks, bombing, and loss of life among soldiers and ordinary citizens as the Russians attempt to control their country. Mykola described the historic animosity that leads to this kind of war between Russia and Ukraine.
They are extremely grateful for our assistance and believe that they will ultimately prevail but if not they will lose their identity and their homeland. They ask us to keep abreast of the war when it becomes no longer news and to think about accepting refugees when they need homes and jobs in the US.
