President Campbell welcomed those at the Grand Ely Lodge and via Zoom. We were reminded that we still have many raffle tickets to sell and our President sent around a signup sheet for July 22nd, July 23rd, and 24th with her at Zup's. Presenter Today: Today was all about our International Exchange programs - Hannah Jankovec and a surprise visit from Finn Leisching from Germany.
Hannah Jankovec, daughter of former member, Mike Jankovec, was our outbound exchange student to Japan in 2016/2017. Hannah became interested after a Rotary presentation at Memorial Senior high but had to wait until she was old enough. When she ultimately applied she was chosen by the District and given her top choice for an exchange.
She described that there were difficult parts of becoming part of another culture, much different from ours, but spoke glowingly of her homes in Japan and the friendships made there and through Rotary and its values.
Since her arrival back home and graduation from Memorial Senior High, she chose American University in Washington, D.C. for her college education. While there she did a study abroad in Seoul, South Korea. She has now learned both Japanese and Korean and is truly an international individual.
She would not commit to a specific career upon graduation this December, but will make a career in something related to international relations, business, or perhaps even the State Department.
Today was a great reminder of the great work that both our Club and our community have done with inviting students to both come to Ely and then be brave enough to go off on an adventure like Hannah's.
We also heard from Finn Leisching from Germany who has come back to Ely and the US as he travels to exciting places like Australia and Bali before beginning his college in his hometown in Germany.
