Rotary Club of Ely

Meeting Summary - january 19, 2022 - Meeting 5071

jackson herran - northern tobbogan/wintergreen

Angela Campbell welcomed members for a Zoom only regular meeting.
Jeff Sundell reported that both Todd and Kurt are absent so he and Angela are leading the meeting today.

Jackson Herran - Northern Toboggan and Wintergreen Manufacturing and Store

Jackson Herran was our presenter on Zoom today. His father founded Northern Toboggan in 1995 in Warroad MN and it has since become a family business, with the latest iteration being the purchase of Wintergreen from the Schurkes and the opening of a toboggan and snowshoe shop in the log structure on the corner. The shop will be open Tuesday to Saturday 11 to 4. They are also just beginning a business of rental of toboggans and snowshoes. A longer range vision could include a toboggan slide here in Ely.

Their stock in trade is high quality, locally made products, largely with materials that they source in the US. They have two mills for wood supply, one in Wisconsin. They have a long history of providing products to folks, both in the US and Canada. They primarily make toboggans and snowshoes and now have branched out into the garment market with Wintergreen.

Issues for them include the shortage of skilled sewing artisans and some supply chain issues and has led to them outsourcing more piecework to people in Ely, Warroad, and Duluth.

The family of five is still based in Warroad, but there is at least consideration to a move to Ely in the future. See their products at northerntoboggan.com.

Information from Lori Linkous.

Lori asked me to share the following information for you to consider:

This is information regarding the Behavior Health Curriculum I facilitate in the school (grades 6-12) in partnership with the School and ECR.  It's important information for the community to have.

My ask is not for the Rotary in general but for members, either as business owners in the community or community members.  The HRSA Grant that funds our project at the BHN does not allow us to purchase certain things.  We are contributing movie passes during some of these sessions for prizing/incentives to some of the students.  Contributions for candy, donuts, other passes, gift cards, swag to toss out, etc would be so great to have during this time.  We have 4 facilitators teamed up in pairs of 2 working with 4 classes at a time.

Any contributions, ideas or questions can be directed to me at loril@elybhn.org.
