Rotary Club of Ely

Meeting Summary - october 12, 2022 - Meeting 5106

John Fedo - Ely Economic Development

President Campbell welcomed those at the Grand Ely Lodge and via Zoom.

President Campbell updated us on the distribution of the roses at Zup's over the weekend. She and Jeff Sundell participated in the candidate forum last evening for the school board election. The roadside cleanup is scheduled for next week.

John Fedo - Ely's Economic Development Consultant.

Former Mayor of Duluth, John Fedo, has had a long career in government and development, in Duluth, Hibbing, and more recently as an economic development consultant.

He described Ely's reputation as very positive when it comes to working with businesses and also with funding agencies. He stressed relationships and partnerships. He works with Harold Langowski, the City Council, the Projects Committee, and current and potential new businesses.

Some of the current initiatives include broadband, the downtown fiber loop, building upgrade grants and loans, and most recently the pursuit of funds to complete the Trailhead Center. Their pursuit of $1.5 million in federal EDA funds will allow for construction beginning by next spring.

He and the City work with IRRRB and AEOA to assist with building upgrade projects, energy upgrades, and grants to assist businesses that are adding employees. He spoke of working with Zup's, Razor Edge, Spirit of the Wilderness, and two pending projects he would not name.

A good primer on how he and the City are working steadily to improve business and development in Ely. As he said they shoot for singles, not home runs, in pursuit for economic development.
