Exchange student program
Dec 18, 2024
Ely Rotary Club is looking for three exchange host families for 3 month sections of the school year 2025-26. One of the strengths of this model of youth exchange is the smaller time commitment from our volunteers, and students continue to learn from different family interactions.
Rotary Youth Exchange is one of the BEST things Rotary International does!
Hosting an exchange student can help you change as a person, get a new perspective, and make friends with people from other countries.
Push yourself out of your comfort zone - try new things! You learn so much and hosting an exchange student will expand your world.
This video is from our Rotary International Youth Exchange webpage.
Expand your family! Grow as an adult. Learn about other cultures. Not always easy, but definitely worth it!
Anyone interested should please contact me 715-615-2414 or susanpolege@gmail.com, and I can help answer questions and direct to the host family application form.
I've attached a short guide for host families as well for info.

Hudson Bay Trip and other Guided Trips
Mar 05, 2025 12:00 PM
I was born and raised in on the Range and went to Grand Rapids High School. I Graduated in 1975 from Mankato State with a degree in Resource Management. In 1978 I picked up another undergrad degree from the University of Minnesota in Education. I have a Master of Education from St. Scholastica, graduating in 2000. I started teaching in the Ely Public School in 1979 and retired in 2010. My summer job for those years was as a guide in the BWCA. I had my own guiding company for much of that time and worked as well for many of the local outfitters. I am a professional photographer and writer. I write for a couple of periodicals and have published three books.

Mary Palcich Keyes
Mary is familiar to area residents for her "Years of Yore" articles about Iron Range history in the Mesabi Tribune and affiliated newspapers. Mary holds leadership roles in the Hibbing Historical Society and represents the Society on the St. Louis County Historical Society Board of Governors.
After graduation from Hibbing High School, Mary attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, earning degrees in English, Speech/Theatre, and Secondary Education. She taught Senior English for 18 years at Hill-Murray High School in St. Paul. She then taught classes about Minnesota history and research for four years at the Minnesota Historical Society's History Center in downtown St. Paul. She and her husband Joe returned to her hometown in 2003 where they owned and operated Howard Street Booksellers until 2015. Although they no longer have a storefront, they continue to order books for individuals and organizations. They also give tours of Historic Hibbing, Bob Dylan's Hibbing, and the magnificent Hibbing High School.
